The Akshaya Tritiya festival, also known as Akshaya Teej or Akha Teej, is an annual celebration in spring observed by Hindus and Jains in India and Nepal. It is considered an auspicious time symbolizing the "third day of unending prosperity." Celebrated on the third Tithi (lunar day) of the Bright Half of the Vaisakha month, its date varies according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar, typically falling in April or May of the Gregorian calendar.
In Sanskrit, "Akshaya" translates to "never-ending money" or signifies "prosperity, hope, joy, success," while Tritiya means "third." The festival is named after the third lunar day of the Vaisakha month in the Hindu calendar. Akshaya Tritiya is associated with various legends, including being the birthday of Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is also believed that on this day, Veda Vyasa and Lord Ganesha commenced writing the Mahabharata, and the Pandavas received the "Akshaya Patra" gift from the Sun God.
There is the sacred significance of Akshaya Tritiya amongst the Hindu community, as this occasion is considered a lucky day. As per the beliefs, any new venture, wedding, business, or building construction will be prosperous if started on this day. People also perform holy rites, rituals, and acts of charity that are believed to bring grace, prosperity, and unending bliss. Starting a new activity or buying valuables like precious jewellery on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring success or good fortune.
Devotees worship Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Lakshmi for a prosperous life. They also distribute rice, ghee, clothes, vegetables, fruits, and salt to the poor. On this day, people who observe the year-long alternative day fasting known as Varshi-tap break their fasting by drinking sugarcane juice.
